Overview

Measurements International’s (MI) series of Shunt Measurement Systems offers the best accuracy and lowest uncertainty of any commercial system available on the market today. The MI high current range extenders expand the measuring capabilities of the MI model 6010 and MI model 6242 to measure lower resistance values at higher currents with accredited uncertainties <20 ppm@10uΩ to 0.1ppm@1Ω and 0.1ppm@10kΩ being achievable.

The new series of shunt measurement systems are the only self calibrating bridge systems which use a full 25 bit binary wound DCC Comparator. Self calibration of the comparator can be verified using the interchange technique when calibrating resistors. The 6010 and 6242 series bridges are commonly being used globaly to calibrate resistors and shunts as well as other manufacturer’s bridges and shunt measurement systems.

With the ability to go up in current to 3000A and above as well as voltages up to 1000V and above (6242 only) the MI high current systems have become the optimal solution for Metrology Laboratories worldwide.

The MI 6010 and 6242 series of Shunt Measurement Systems provide the widest range with lowest uncertainty of any manufacturer. The reversing switch has the advantage that the systematic error due to current mismatch between the positive current and the negative current amplitudes is negligible.

MI is the ONLY manufacturer that provides this.

System Design - 150Amp

The 6010/150 or 6242/150 System includes the MI 6011D Range extender and the 6150A (max 150A) Power Supply to create an automatic shunt measurement system. The Ratio/Range table (Table 1) and basic system schematic (figure 1) is shown below. High current connections are made to the front of the rack. The system maybe expanded using a 4220/30A twenty channel matrix scanner which allows automated measurements of twenty 30A shunts. The system comes supplied in a 1224 mm height rack or a 1530 mm height rack for further expansion.

Standard resistors of 1Ω, 10Ω and 100Ω may also be used to extend the ratio of the 6011 range extenders for higher currents. For example if you had a 0.01Ω shunt to be calibrated at 100A it could be calibrated on Range 1000 using a 10Ω standard on Rs or if you had a 0.1Ω shunt to be calibrated at 15A you can calibrate it on Range 1000 using a 100Ω standard.

Measurement of Non Decade Resistor Values

For optimum performance the 6010 or 6242 bridges should be on ratio 1 when used with the 6011D range extender. Other ratio’s or non-decade resistance values, for example 0.2 Ω to 0.9 Ω, can be measured on the ratio 100 range using a 10 ohm as the reference resistor. The maximum output current of the 6011 is 200 mA. For lower current measurements the standard deviation of the measurement may increase. Higher currents can also be applied to the shunt when using reference resistors of 10 and 100 ohms.

 

System Power

The system can be powered from a 100V, 120V, 220V or 240V single phase supply. Mounted on wheels the 6010/150, 6010/200 or 6010/300 can be moved about easily when required

System Design - 300Amp

The 6010/300 or 6242/300 Amp Systems may be used in conjunction with MI’s Model 6011D/300 and the MI 6250A (max 300A) Power Supply for the measurement of shunt resistances between 0.00001Ω and 0.1Ω. The 6011D/300 has ratios of 30, 300 and 3000 with input currents of 3A, 30A and 300 amps respectively. The maximum output current is 100mA on all ranges.

The system maybe expanded using a 4220/30A twenty channel matrix scanner which allows automated measurements of twenty 30A shunts. The system comes supplied in a 1530 mm height rack. This allows for further future expansion without changing the rack.

System Power

The system can be powered from a 100V, 120V, 220V or 240V single phase supply. Mounted on wheels the 6010/150, 6010/200 or 6010/300 can be moved about easily when required.

System Design - 3000Amp

The 6010/3000 or 6242/3000 Amp Systems may be used in conjunction with the 6011D/150, the 6012M, 6013M or 6014M High Current Range Extenders and the MI 6023, MI 6024 or MI 6025 High Current Reversing Switches for the measurement of shunt resistances between 0.0000001Ω and 0.1Ω.

The 6011D/150 has ratios of 10, 100 and 1,000 and the 6012M, 6013M or 6014M have a ratio of 1000:1. Combined this totals a ratio of 1,000,000:1 with input currents up to 3000 amps. The maximum output current of the 6012M, 6013M or 6014M is 2 amps, 0.4 amps and 3 amps respectively. The output current of the 6012M feeds into the 6011D 10A range, 6013M on the 1 amp range and the 6014M on the 10 amp range on the 6011D/150.

The system is supplied in two 1530 mm height racks on wheels. The 6010/1000 includes the 6010/150 in one rack and the 6012M and 6025 and one 1000A power supply in the second rack. The 6010/2000 includes the 6010/150 in one rack and the 6012M and 6025 and two 1000A power supplies in the second rack. The 6010/3000 includes the 6010/150 in one rack and the 6014M and 6024 and three 1000A power supplies in the second rack.

The base accuracy for the 6010/3000 or 6242/3000 is <2 ppm. This includes the uncertainty for the high current range extender (6012M or 6014M), the 6011D/150 (1000, 100,10) and the 6010D or 6242. Being a true ratio device the power supplies or reversing switch have an insignificant contribution to the overall uncertainty of the system. Been a ratio device a ratio calibration technique is used to calibrate the 6012M or 6014M and 6011D/150 range extender against the 6010/6242 bridges. A block diagram of the 6010/1000/2000/3000 is shown below in Figure 5.

6010/1000A/2000A,3000A Connections

Connection of the shunt is made at the side of the rack where two copper plates extend through the side panel. This effectively removes any heat loss due to poor connections using wires or cables to connect the shunt. In the high current shunt measurement system, the output current of the 6012M, 6013M and 6014M range extenders (with ratio of 1000:1) feeds directly into the 6011/150A range extender as automatic ranging is performed inside the 6011/150.

Copper bars are used to extend the 6010/3000A bus connections so that there is no heat loss in the connections or copper bars yielding lower standard deviations in the measurements. This is far superior than using braided cables. These copper bars can be supplied as an option with shunts that you order from Measurements International.
